(Salat ul Tasbih): A Powerful Prayer for Forgiveness and Spiritual Growth

25 Mar 2025

Salat ul Tasbih (صلاة التسبيح) is a unique and spiritually elevating voluntary Salah that carries immense rewards. It is a special prayer the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ personally recommended to his beloved uncle, al-‘Abbas ibn ‘Abd al-Muttalib (رضي الله عنه), emphasizing that it leads to complete forgiveness of all sins — past and future, hidden and apparent, minor and major.

In this article, we will explore:

  • What is Salat ul Tasbih?
  • Its benefits
  • How to perform it correctly (with Arabic supplications)
  • Best times to pray
  • Common mistakes to avoid
  • References from Hadith and scholarly works

What is Salat ul Tasbih?

Salat ul Tasbih is a 4 Raka’at (units of prayer) Nafl (voluntary) prayer that includes the recitation of a special Tasbih (تسبيح) repeated 75 times in each Rak’ah, totaling 300 times throughout the entire prayer.

The Prophet ﷺ said:

“O Abbas! O my uncle! Shall I not give you? Shall I not grant you? Shall I not present to you? Shall I not do for you ten things? If you do them, Allah will forgive your sins — the first and the last, the old and the new, the unintentional and intentional, the small and the large, the hidden and the open.”
(Sunan Abu Dawood 1297, Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 481)

The Tasbih for Salatul Tasbih

The following Tasbih is recited 300 times throughout the prayer:

Transliteration:

Subḥānallāhi wal-ḥamdu lillāhi wa lā ilāha illallāhu wallāhu akbar

Translation:

“Glory be to Allah, all praise is for Allah, there is no god but Allah, and Allah is the Greatest.”

How to Perform Salat ul Tasbih (Step-by-Step)

Niyyah (Intention)

Say in your heart or verbally:
نَوَيْتُ أَنْ أُصَلِّيَ أَرْبَعَ رَكَعَاتٍ نَافِلَةً لِلّٰهِ تَعَالَى صَلَاةَ التَّسْبِيحِ
“I intend to pray four Raka’at of Salat ul Tasbih for the sake of Allah.”

Step-by-Step Breakdown of One Rak’ah:

  1. Start with Takbir (تكبيرة الإحرام):
  2. Recite the Opening Supplication (Sana):
    سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، وَتَبَارَكَ اسْمُكَ، وَتَعَالَى جَدُّكَ، وَلَا إِلٰهَ غَيْرُكَ
  3. Recite Surah Al-Fatiha, then any short Surah (e.g. Surah Al-Ikhlas)
  4. Recite the Tasbih 10 times
  5. Perform Ruku’ (Bowing):
(3 times), then recite the Tasbih 10 times
  6. Stand up (Qauma):
    Say: سَمِعَ اللّٰهُ لِمَنْ حَمِدَهُ، رَبَّنَا لَكَ الْحَمْدُ, then recite the Tasbih 10 times
  7. Go to Sujood (Prostration):
    Say: سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى (3 times), then recite the Tasbih 10 times
  8. Sit between the two Sujoods (Jalsa):
    Recite the Tasbih 10 times
  9. Perform the second Sujood:
Again say: سُبْحَانَ رَبِّيَ الأَعْلَى (3 times), then recite the Tasbih 10 times
  10. Continue this format for all 4 Rak’ahs
    (Each Rak’ah has 75 Tasbih repetitions. 4 Rak’ahs = 300 total.)

Best Time to Perform Salat ul Tasbih

Salat ul Tasbih can be performed any time of the day or night except:

  • After Fajr until sunrise
  • At Zawāl (midday, when the sun is at its peak)
  • After Asr until sunset

Recommended times:

  • After Isha or during Tahajjud
  • Before Dhuhr
  • On Friday
  • During the last 10 nights of Ramadan

How Often Should You Pray It?

While it is recommended as often as possible, the minimum encouraged by the Prophet ﷺ is at least once in a lifetime.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • ❌ Counting Tasbih aloud
  • ❌ Using prayer beads or fingers to count during Salah
  • ❌ Rushing through the Tasbih
  • ❌ Losing concentration

Maintain humility, presence of heart (خشوع), and reflect on Allah’s mercy during each repetition.

Hadith & Scholarly References

  1. Sunan Abu Dawood 1297 – Authenticated as Hasan by many scholars
“Whoever prays it, Allah will forgive all his sins…”
  2. Jami‘ at-Tirmidhi 481 – Reported from Ibn ‘Abbas (RA)
Prophet ﷺ described its comprehensive forgiveness.
  3. Ibn Majah 1387 – As part of voluntary prayers for spiritual upliftment
  4. Imam Al-Ghazali in Iḥyāʾ ʿUlūm al-Dīn
Strongly promotes Salat ul Tasbih as a powerful act of self-purification
  5. Imam Nawawi and Ibn Hajar
Acknowledged the chain as acceptable (though some classified it as weak, the scholars of amal – practical application – still promoted it due to its immense virtues and general leniency in Fadā’il al-A‘māl).

Conclusion: A Gateway to Forgiveness and Peace

Salat ul Tasbih is a divine gift for the believers, especially during Ramadan, when hearts are softer and doors of mercy are wide open. Make it a part of your worship routine — weekly, monthly, or even once in your life — and witness the spiritual transformation.

“O you who believe! Turn to Allah in sincere repentance…”
Surah At-Tahrim, 66:8
